UN GLOBAL SUSTAINABILITY REPORT LAUNCHED |
30 January 2012 | Jakarta – A major global report was launched this afternoon spelling out clear recommendations on how governments and the private sector should move forward in a balance of environmental, social and environmental imperatives for sustainable development.The report, entitled "Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A future worth choosing", is posted on the web at www.un.org/gsp. One of the panel's co-chairs, President Jacob Zuma of South Africa, was present at the launch in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Co-Chair President Tarja Halonen of Finland delivered a statement by videoWhile it does not reveal any startling new facts -- it actually does not provide any new research -- the Report of the UN Secretary-General’s High Level Panel is significant because it takes a practical look at the problems and solutions. The panel consisted of 22 members including heads of states, former heads of state, ministers and government officials. In his initial charge to the panel, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asked them to think big, but also to be realistic and practical. The report, which was developed by the panel over six meetings over the last 16 months, is the culmination of that effort.
